Bodmin Class - Autumn 2019

Teacher: Mr Paine
Teaching Assistant: Mrs Lethbridge

Welcome to Bodmin class - Autumn term 2019

The Autumn term in Bodmin class is packed full of amazing enrichment activities and exciting opportunities for learning. Within mathematics we will be exploring number and place value as well as the four operations. These key mathematical skills underpin everything we do in this subject; it is of vital importance that children are exposed to this early in the academic year to ensure a smooth transition into the other topics covered. By providing a strong foundation in number and place value, we are giving children the opportunity to master procedural fluency and develop a deep conceptual understanding of each mathematical topic. As always, we will look to build on prior knowledge and extend the children's understanding by providing opportunities for reasoning and problem solving.
Our English lessons will provide an opportunity to explore both non-fiction and fictional texts. Within the first half of term we will be looking at the phenomenal Shackleton’s Journey – an epic tale into the legendary ship Endurance and the perilous adventure that Ernest Shackleton went on. Furthermore, we will be exploring a selection of fiction pieces that will spark creativity and encourage increased writing stamina.
History will be the key focus for the first half term; children will be exploring some of the challenges that the modern world face. Specifically, we will be looking into the United Arab Emirates and how this financial powerhouse has risen to economic royalty in the last century. In comparison, children will also be investigating Anglo-Saxon Britain. What challenges did these post-Roman invaders face as they settled into Britain?
The wider curriculum is of upmost importance to Boasley Cross and so we will be taking part in bespoke drama classes with Harriet Davies (Okehampton College), in preparation for the school’s Christmas performance.
Finally, Bodmin class will be investigating the work of artists Henri Matisse and Andre Derain – these famous artists developed their own unique style between 1900 and 1905. We call this style Fauvism and we will explore the techniques used by these artists in our art sessions.

Welcome to Dartmoor class – Autumn Term 2019

Dartmoor class currently has 18 children, Years 3 and 4. Our Autumn term is packed with challenging, fun and engaging activities that look to stimulate learning in the safe environment of Boasley Cross Primary School.
Our Autumn Term is focusing on what we find challenging, both on a personal and global level with the question of “What challenges face the Modern World today?”
Our Maths focus this term will help us to consolidate our understanding of Place Value and number, working on column addition and subtraction. Our English will focus on both fiction and non-fiction texts which will also teach us vocabulary needed for our Science subject of skeletons.
Our History work at the beginning of term will follow the Anglo Saxons and how they settled in the UK; we will then contrast their lifestyle with modern day living in the United Arab Emirates – one extreme to the other.
After half-term, we will learn all about rivers in our Geography topic work; discussing different physical features of rivers and the technical vocabulary we can use.
Throughout the term, we will be working hard to show how we can be 'Respectful, Resourceful and Resilient'.
Please see our Curriculum Overview for more details on our learning areas.

Littlemoor class has 14 children, Early Years Foundation Stage, Year 1 and Year 2.
Our Autumn term is an exciting mix of outdoor learning, trips and visitors, creative curriculum and, of course, lots of fun and engaging learning! Forest school sessions are to continue for each child and there will be plenty of opportunity to learn outdoors and get messy! Littlemoor are focusing on our key question this term - What is a challenge? -  We have had lots of opportunities for discussion and have been challenging ourselves in our learning.

The core subjects of Mathematics and English are taught in the morning with extra guided reading sessions and Phonics. The children in Littlemoor have roles and responsibilities in the class showing respect for the environment we live in. In Littlemoor, we enjoy emergent learning through play, exploring and investigating everything we find interesting.
Our Pre-school is thriving and the children are integrating into school life well. We have welcomed new additions to our pre-school and are proud to be able to provide an excellent start to their education through the Reggio Emilia approach to early learning.

Welcome to Bodmin class - Summer term 2019

The summer term in Bodmin class is packed full of amazing enrichment activities and exciting opportunities for learning. Our final topics for mathematics will be shape, geometry, position and direction. As always, we will look to build on prior knowledge and extend the children's understanding by providing opportunities for reasoning and problem solving. Our English lessons will provide a final opportunity to showcase their writing with a Bronze Age style writing task. We look forward to two residential trips - the Year 6 residential takes place between Monday July 1st and Wednesday July 3rd. The Year 5 residential leaves on the 10th July and returns on Friday 12th July. Year 6 children will have the opportunity to showcase their production skills as they create a summer leavers service. Finally, children will also be taking part in sexual education sessions led by Mr Paine and Mrs Petersen. These sessions are not optional and all children will be taking part.

Welcome to Dartmoor class - Summer Term 2019

Dartmoor class currently have 20 children, Years 3 and 4. Our Summer term is packed with challenging, fun and engaging activities that look to stimulate learning in the safe environment of Boasley Cross Primary School.
Our Summer Term consists of two separate topic areas; the first being “Home or Away?” comparing life in modern day Japan with the UK and the second, “Past and Present” exploring life from the Iron Age to the Bronze age in our local area.
Our Maths focus this term will include statistics, money, time, Geometry (Property of Shape) and Position and Direction. Our English will focus on both fiction and non-fiction texts including instruction and letter writing. We will be making full use of our newly renovated Forest school area for outdoor learning in our Science lessons focusing on plants and using our investigative skills and observations to conduct a variety of plant based experiments. Our Japanese topic has a strong geographical focus that will enable children to explore the locality, physical and human features of a different country as well as comparing and contrasting the culture and lifestyle of Japan with our familiar surroundings.
For the second half-term, we will be exploring the history and geography of our local area to discover Bronze Age settlements on Dartmoor including a guided walk on Dartmoor.
Years 3 and 4 children will also be taking part in lots of physical education enrichment activities; these include rugby with Plymouth Albion, cricket and tennis, as well as weekly swimming lessons.   Boasley Cross prides itself on providing children with opportunities to enhance learning in the classroom - Dartmoor class is no exception!  We are working on showing respect to everyone in school, modelling our Golden Rules and engaging in peer work with the younger children in Littlemoor.  In Dartmoor class we value the school ethos in making sure everyone enjoys learning in a safe classroom environment.

Y3/4 OVERVIEW
Welcome to Dartmoor class - Autumn Term 2018

Teacher: Mrs Gardner

Teaching Assistant: Mrs Simmons
Welcome to Dartmoor Class with Mrs Gardner and Mrs Simmons. We’re now a group of 18, Year 3 and Year 4 children who are fascinated by all aspects of the Rainforest.  We are creative, sporty and eager to learn and have been busy settling into our new classroom and making new friends. We’ve taken on new roles and responsibilities and the Year 4’s have “stepped up” to the role of mentoring the Year 3’s. We are working on showing Tolerance towards others and modelling how to be “Good to be Green”, our new behaviour system.
We are learning all about the mammals, plants, birds and reptiles that are in the Rainforests and we’re great at fact-finding information to use across all our curriculum subjects. We have an exciting trip planned to the Eden Project this term which should further expand our knowledge of this area.
Please see our Curriculum overview for further information on what we’re learning.

Littlemoor Pre-School

Opened in September 2018, Littlemoor Pre-School embraces the Reggio Emila approach to early education – an educational philosophy centred on child-led, experiential learning in relationship-driven, natural environments. At Boasley Cross, we focus on pupils’ natural development; the child is respected and we encourage their sense of curiosity, allowing them to succeed long-term.
This unique approach to educating children was founded in the villages around Reggio Emilia, Italy, after World War II. Parents were looking for a way to teach their children and found that the early years of development were the best time to help children figure out who they are as individuals.
Parental involvement is invited and encouraged. We offer a heuristic environment where the outside and inside environments merge, making the most out of the five senses whilst fostering creativity.
Our guiding principles:
1. Image of the child – Adults are aware of each child’s potential and it’s their responsibility to help support and guide children throughout the journey of learning.
2. Emergent curriculum – Through careful observation of the classroom, teachers can introduce learning explorations and provocations and develop long-term projects. The curriculum emerges from the children, allowing the learning process to become a spiralling progression.
3. Role of the environment – classrooms are open, inviting spaces filled with natural resources, real life materials, mirrors, windows and natural lighting. Learning spaces are designed to promote a sense of wonder, inquiry, and human connection.
4. Parental involvement – learning takes place not only in school but at home and in the community. Parents are encouraged to participate in their child’s education and daily life at school and to extend and reinforce learning opportunities at home.
At Littlemoor Pre-School, we believe that children are not empty vessels waiting to be filled with adult-given knowledge, but are constructors of their own learning and experience. Children can find meaning and joy through play.  Each child has their own language, their own path towards learning.  Each child’s unique path becomes our focus.
Please telephone Boasley Cross on 01837 871362 to arrange a visit and see our pre-school practices for yourself. We are currently accepting children from the age of 3 years.
