Computing Curriculum
Intent
At Boasley Cross Primary School, we recognise the vital importance of igniting a passion for learning through a comprehensive and engaging Computing Curriculum. We aim to build a strong foundation that equips our children with the essential skills they will need to navigate an ever-evolving world. Technology is continuously transforming our lives, and many of the careers our students will pursue do not yet exist. By teaching computing, we empower children to participate confidently in a rapidly changing environment where work, communication, and recreation are increasingly shaped by technology.
Our goal is to inspire children to explore, analyse, and communicate information with purpose and precision. We emphasise the skills necessary for them to become discerning, confident creators and consumers of information across diverse digital landscapes. With a curriculum rooted in computational thinking, we nurture creativity, independence, and a growth mindset. We believe in providing every opportunity for children to develop these abilities, embedding them across all areas of learning so they can grow into innovative, adaptable, and informed individuals.
Implementation within the curriculum
Boasley Cross Primary School has established a rolling programme for computing that ensures core skills are taught and developed each year, creating a strong foundation for deeper learning and skill mastery. This curriculum design integrates Computing across subjects, encouraging students to apply their skills in a range of contexts. For example, students might create animations to illustrate population migration during the Industrial Revolution, create a podcast to summarise their learning in Science or produce soundtracks to accompany videos in Music.
To deliver this enriched curriculum, we use high-quality teaching resources and the twelve pedagogical principles recommended by the National Centre for Computing Education. Technology such as Chromebooks, Bee Bots, MicroBits, alongside off-grid learning experiences, provides hands-on opportunities for students to bring computational concepts to life. Specialist teachers and volunteers guide curriculum implementation, ensuring engaging, impactful learning for all students.
Impact
Boasley Cross Primary School is dedicated to delivering a Computing curriculum that fosters a deep understanding of key concepts, terms, and knowledge, providing students with a consistent and shared foundation.
Measures of Success:
- Students develop the essential skills needed to be safe, responsible consumers and creators of digital content, supporting their digital well-being.
- Through integrated curriculum design, students become proficient readers and decoders of code, which complements their progress in the reading curriculum.
- Students bring abstract computing concepts to life by engaging in real-world opportunities to showcase their understanding, applying learning in practical, meaningful ways.
- Achievement of age-related expectations in Computing at the end of each cohort year, underpinned by well-sequenced lessons and progression through each Key Stage.
- By engaging in Computing projects and activities, students enhance collaborative skills essential for solving complex problems, fostering teamwork and the development of shared understanding across all year groups.
Through these measures, we ensure that our students gain a solid foundation in Computing, preparing them for a digital future with confidence and creativity.
