History
"A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots." – Marcus Garvey.
At Boasley Cross Primary School, our history curriculum inspires children to develop a fascination with the past and an understanding of how history has shaped the world we live in today. Through the study of local, British and world history, we encourage pupils to explore the experiences, achievements and challenges of people throughout time, helping them develop a strong sense of identity and belonging.
Using the United Curriculum, children build a secure chronological understanding of history while investigating significant people, civilisations, events and societies. They develop the skills of historians by asking thoughtful questions, analysing evidence, comparing different viewpoints and drawing conclusions from a range of sources. Through their learning, pupils come to appreciate how the past influences the present and helps us understand the future.
Our school values are embedded throughout our history curriculum:
- Respectful – Children learn to value different cultures, communities and experiences from the past, recognising the diversity of human history and developing empathy for those whose lives may have been very different from their own.
- Resourceful – Pupils use a variety of historical sources, including artefacts, photographs, documents and oral histories, to investigate the past, question evidence and construct their own informed interpretations.
- Resilient – Children are encouraged to think critically, challenge assumptions and persevere when evaluating complex historical events, causes and consequences. They learn that historians often have to analyse incomplete evidence and consider multiple perspectives before reaching conclusions.
Throughout their journey, pupils develop an understanding of key historical concepts including chronology, change and continuity, cause and consequence, similarity and difference, significance and evidence. They learn to place historical events within wider contexts and make meaningful connections between different periods of history.
By the time they leave Boasley Cross, our children will be enquiring, knowledgeable and thoughtful historians who understand how the past has shaped the communities and world around them. They will be equipped with the skills to question, investigate and reflect, enabling them to become informed and engaged citizens of the future.
