Religion and World Views

"The more we understand each other, the more we can understand ourselves."The Dalai Lama

At Boasley Cross Primary School, Religion and Worldviews enables children to explore what people believe and what difference those beliefs make to the way they live. Through the Devon and Torbay Agreed Syllabus, pupils learn about a range of religious and non-religious worldviews, developing the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage thoughtfully with questions of meaning, purpose, identity and belonging.

Our curriculum helps children to understand the diverse world in which they live by exploring Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hindu traditions and Humanism. Through stories, sacred texts, celebrations, places of worship and encounters with lived experiences, pupils develop a coherent understanding of different worldviews while reflecting on their own beliefs, values and experiences.

Religion and Worldviews is taught through three key strands:

  • Making Sense of Beliefs – understanding what people believe and why those beliefs matter.
  • Understanding the Impact – exploring how beliefs influence people's lives, actions and communities.
  • Making Connections – reflecting on similarities, differences and the relevance of these ideas to our own lives and the wider world.

Our school values are woven throughout the curriculum:

  • Respectful – Children learn to appreciate and value the rich diversity of beliefs, cultures and traditions within modern Britain and beyond. They develop empathy, understanding and the ability to engage respectfully with viewpoints that may differ from their own, recognising that every individual deserves dignity and respect.

  • Resourceful – Pupils learn to ask thoughtful questions, analyse different sources of information and consider a range of perspectives before reaching conclusions. They develop the confidence to engage in discussion, challenge ideas respectfully and think critically about complex questions of belief, morality and identity.

  • Resilient – Children are encouraged to explore challenging questions about life, meaning and values with curiosity and openness. They learn that there are often different answers to important questions and develop the confidence to reflect on their own ideas while listening to and learning from others.

As a rural school, Religion and Worldviews plays an important role in broadening children's understanding of the wider world. It encourages them to celebrate diversity, challenge stereotypes and develop the knowledge and cultural awareness needed to thrive in an increasingly interconnected society. Through enquiry, discussion and reflection, pupils gain a deeper appreciation of both the differences and shared values that connect people across communities and cultures.

By the time they leave Boasley Cross, our children will be thoughtful, respectful and informed young people who can engage confidently with different beliefs and worldviews. They will be equipped to contribute positively to modern Britain, demonstrating curiosity, compassion and understanding in an increasingly diverse world.
