Physical Education

At Boasley Cross Primary School, we believe that Physical Education is about far more than sport. It is an essential part of every child's development, helping them to build physical literacy, confidence, resilience and a lifelong enjoyment of being active. Through a broad and ambitious curriculum, we develop the fundamental movement skills, knowledge and motivation children need to lead healthy, active lives both now and in the future.
From the earliest years, children develop agility, balance, coordination and control before progressing to more advanced skills, tactics and leadership opportunities. Through games, gymnastics, dance, athletics, outdoor and adventurous activities, pupils learn how to move effectively, work collaboratively and challenge themselves to improve. Our curriculum enables children to become physically literate individuals who can apply their skills confidently across a range of sporting contexts.
Our school values are woven throughout PE:
- Respectful – Children learn the importance of fairness, teamwork, sportsmanship and respect for teammates, opponents and officials.
- Resourceful – Pupils develop problem-solving skills, tactical awareness and the ability to adapt and improve their performance in different situations.
- Resilient – Children are encouraged to persevere, embrace challenge, learn from mistakes and strive to achieve their personal best, recognising that improvement comes through practice and determination.
Sport plays a particularly important role in life at Boasley Cross. Through football, netball, cricket, athletics, cross-country and a wide range of festivals, fixtures and competitions, children have regular opportunities to represent their school and develop their confidence in competitive and cooperative environments. These experiences help pupils build teamwork, communication and leadership skills while fostering a sense of pride in their school community.
As a small rural school, PE also provides valuable opportunities for children to develop friendships beyond our own setting. Through sporting events with local schools, many pupils meet and compete alongside children they will later attend secondary school with. These shared experiences help children build relationships, increase confidence and ensure that the transition to secondary education feels familiar and exciting rather than daunting.
By the time they leave Boasley Cross, our children will be physically literate, confident and resilient young people who understand the importance of physical activity for both physical and mental wellbeing. They will have developed a love of movement, an appreciation of teamwork and the confidence to participate fully in sport and active lifestyles throughout their lives.
