Music
"Music is a world within itself, with a language we all understand." – Stevie Wonder
At Boasley Cross Primary School, we believe that music is a powerful form of expression that enriches children's lives, nurtures creativity and brings people together. Through our music curriculum, we aim to develop a lifelong love of music, enabling every child to participate, perform, create and appreciate music from a wide range of genres, cultures and traditions. Music plays an important role in supporting children's academic, social and emotional development while fostering confidence, resilience and self-expression.
Using the Charanga scheme of learning, pupils develop their musical knowledge and skills through listening, singing, composing, improvising and performing. Children build their understanding progressively as they explore rhythm, pitch, pulse, dynamics, tempo and notation, while experiencing the joy of creating music both independently and collaboratively.
Our school values are at the heart of our music curriculum:
- Respectful – Children learn to appreciate and celebrate a wide range of musical cultures, traditions and performances, developing respect for the contributions of others and the power of music to connect communities.
- Resourceful – Pupils are encouraged to experiment, compose, improvise and use a range of instruments, technology and musical ideas creatively, developing the confidence to express themselves in different ways.
- Resilient – Through regular practice, rehearsal and performance, children learn perseverance, self-discipline and the confidence to take risks, refine their skills and grow as musicians.
Music provides opportunities for all children to work collaboratively, perform to audiences and experience the enjoyment of shared musical experiences. Through singing, instrumental work and creative exploration, pupils develop key life skills including teamwork, communication, concentration and self-confidence.
By the time they leave Boasley Cross, our children will have developed a broad appreciation of music, confidence in their own musical abilities and an understanding of how music enriches lives and communities. They will be enthusiastic, reflective and creative musicians who are ready to continue their musical journey beyond primary school.
