Geography
"Geography underpins a lifelong conversation about the Earth as the home of humankind." – Geographical Association.
At Boasley Cross Primary School, we aim to inspire children with a curiosity and fascination for the world around them and the people who live within it. Through our geography curriculum, pupils develop a deep understanding of places, environments and cultures, helping them make sense of an increasingly interconnected world. We encourage children to explore both their local community and the wider world, developing knowledge, skills and understanding that will remain with them throughout their lives.
Our geography curriculum is built upon the United Curriculum and enables children to develop their understanding of both human and physical geography, from the landscapes and settlements of the United Kingdom to global issues such as climate change, sustainability, migration and trade. Children learn to think like geographers by asking questions, analysing information, conducting fieldwork and drawing conclusions based on evidence.
Our school values are woven throughout our geography curriculum:
- Respectful – We develop respect for different people, cultures, communities and environments, helping children appreciate diversity and understand their role as global citizens.
- Resourceful – Children learn to use maps, atlases, fieldwork, technology and geographical data effectively, applying their knowledge and skills to investigate and solve real-world questions.
- Resilient – Pupils are encouraged to think critically, tackle challenging enquiries and reflect on complex environmental and social issues, developing the confidence to form and justify their own views.
Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, children progressively develop their geographical knowledge and skills, including map work, fieldwork, data collection, comparison, interpretation and decision-making. They explore how places are connected, how environments change over time and how human actions impact the world around us.
By the time they leave Boasley Cross, our children will be knowledgeable, inquisitive and environmentally aware young geographers who understand both their place in the world and their responsibility to care for it. They will have the confidence to ask questions, challenge assumptions and contribute thoughtfully to the future of their communities and our planet.
