"In a world where you can be anything, be kind."Jennifer Dukes Lee

At Boasley Cross Primary School, we believe that PSHE is at the heart of helping children grow into happy, healthy, safe and responsible citizens. Through our PSHE curriculum, based on the SCARF programme (Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship), we equip children with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to navigate life with confidence, build positive relationships and make informed choices about their wellbeing.

Our curriculum supports children's personal development by teaching them how to keep themselves safe and healthy, understand and manage their emotions, build positive relationships and contribute positively to their communities. Through age-appropriate learning, pupils explore topics including mental wellbeing, friendships, families, online safety, physical health, diversity, relationships, citizenship and preparing for the changes they will experience as they grow.

Our school values are woven throughout our PSHE curriculum:

  • Respectful – Children learn to value themselves and others, recognising that everyone has the right to feel safe, included and heard. They develop empathy, kindness and understanding of different perspectives, cultures, beliefs and family structures. Through discussing friendships, relationships and diversity, pupils learn how to build positive relationships and contribute to a caring community.

  • Resourceful – Pupils develop the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the challenges of everyday life. They learn how to solve problems, make informed decisions, assess risks, manage conflict and seek support when needed. Through learning about online safety, mental wellbeing, healthy lifestyles and personal responsibility, children become increasingly confident in making positive choices for themselves and others.

  • Resilient – Children learn that setbacks, worries and challenges are a normal part of life and that resilience helps us overcome them. They develop strategies for managing their emotions, coping with change, handling friendship difficulties and maintaining positive mental wellbeing. Through reflection, discussion and personal goal-setting, pupils build confidence in their ability to face challenges, learn from mistakes and keep going when things become difficult.

Through carefully planned learning experiences, children develop a strong understanding of their rights and responsibilities within school, their community and the wider world. They learn the importance of healthy lifestyles, positive relationships, mental wellbeing and making safe choices, while developing the confidence to express their views and stand up for what is right.

By the time they leave Boasley Cross, our children will be respectful, resourceful and resilient young people who understand themselves and their place in the world. They will be equipped with the knowledge, confidence and character to embrace new opportunities, face challenges positively and contribute successfully to their communities and future lives.
